I downloaded this work because of the excellent price. I found a book of strong characters that I could really relate to. Dear, sweet Skyla was charming yet at times selfish and judgmental. Her neighbor and friend Roxanne Bear, mother of five boys, longing for a little girl, brings out the best in Skyla. Skyla's husband Thomas is not happy with Skyla and Roxanne's friendship because he sees the Bear family as 'white-trash'. Thomas' mother Audrey suffers from 'empty nest' syndrome and tends to force her will on Skyla, who rejects her. Audrey longs for a chance to babysit her granddaughter,Nora, but Skyla arranges for Roxanne to watch Nora after school. Audrey attempts to take Nora away from Roxanne, but is thwarted. Audrey spitefully calls child protective services to report Roxanne as an unfit mother. Following advice from a fortune teller, Audrey makes amends with Roxanne and her family. When Roxanne becomes ill, she encourages Skyla to give Audrey a chance. This is a story of family, love, loss, and hope. I highly recommend it.
